The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
